Kayak Fishing Opens New Waters and New Horizons

By Kastking | 24 August 2018 | 0 Comments

There are hundreds of small streams, rivers, and lakes that seem so pristine and untouched.  They seem perfect for kayak fishing.  Many of these waterways are not accessible via a traditional boat, especially not a by a bigger fiberglass boat, or even many aluminum boats.  Maybe there is no launch ramp.  Maybe anglers looking to access these waterways need to hike in a quarter of a mile (or more) from the nearest trail that serves as a roadway.    It is simply not possibly to lug a heavy boat in to these smaller waterways.

There is a great option, however, to access these secluded bodies of water.  Kayaking has opened new waters to hundreds of anglers and is becoming more popular every year.  Many are ditching the big “go-fast” bass boats and Deep-V big water boats, at least for some trips, and opting for these smaller, lightweight alternatives.  There are several great companies making quality kayaks for all skill levels.  There are smaller craft that have been designed to be more maneuverable, and larger ones that have the ability to cover more water in a shorter time span.  This is an important difference in models.  The perfect choice will depend on the type of water an angler will be fishing most often.  For lake fishing, a larger size may help the angler get across the water quicker.  For small rivers and streams, maneuverability may be key, and therefore a smaller version may be the best bet.

Kayak fishing allows anglers an almost face-to-face fight with the fish they seek.  This form of fishing is becoming more and more popular with bass fishermen just for that reason.  There are clubs and tournaments dedicated to the sport cropping up all over the country.  A simple Internet search can help an angler find and connect with many others who share the same interests, and clubs can be a great place to learn more about the sport.

It’s impressive enough to watch a five pound bass jump out of the water at eye level, but imagine what it would be like to go ocean fishing from a kayak.  Imagine being dragged through the water by a Tarpon, or watching a majestic Marlin as it breaks the surface and does a tail walk to try to shake your bait.  While this form of fishing may not be for everyone, it will definitely get the angler’s heart racing like nothing else.

For an angler looking to truly get back to the nature aspect of the sport, kayak fishing will bring a thrill like no other.  Those who have been in the sport for some time, however, do caution beginners that kayak angling is four parts fishing and one part swimming.   It truly is that easy to get swept away in the excitement of it all.  With several companies making models that are so stable, many anglers stand to cast at structure targets.  It is almost inevitable that, at some point, an angler will leave his or her boat, whether it was intended or not.  That is simply part of the adventure, it is said.
