Kayak Anchors for Shallow Water

By Kastking | 22 January 2018 | 0 Comments

Micro anchors for kayaks and small boats can be magic for holding position in current.

Any fisherman that spends time on the water in the wind knows the value of being able to hold in one spot easily.  Unhooking a fish or retying while trying not to float of the “spot on the spot” can be difficult, too, and it’s no different in a kayak than in a bigger boat.  It can be frustrating, and it can mean lost opportunities.  Luckily, Power Pole® makes a micro anchor specifically for kayaks and other smaller boats.

Power Pole® has become synonymous with shallow water anchors.  They are great for holding the boat in one spot while the angler fishes it thoroughly.  They are very useful for keeping the kayak in one place while retying, changing lures or techniques, or maybe even while munching down a quick sandwich on the water.  Whatever the reason and angler has for holding the kayak in one place, the micro-anchor is the perfect tool to get the job done.

The Micro-anchor is light weight and designed specifically for smaller craft. The motor complete with the clamp weighs in at a small 11.5 pounds.   Anglers can spike their kayak in place in waters as deep as 8 feet.  The spike deploys at a rate of 1.2 ft per second, making holding in one place fairly quick.  There is a key fob that can be mounted directly to the craft, if desired.  This makes it even easier to simply press the button and hold in one place.

Some reviews have mentioned the fact that the front of the kayak may still swing slightly with the micro-anchor deployed.  This is true, just as it is on a bigger bass boat, for instance, with only one Power Pole ®  on the back. However, if an angler plans a bit and takes a look at wind, current, and another factors that may push the boat one way or another, knowing how to position the craft quickly becomes second nature.

These micro anchors are becoming more and more popular with anglers who choose to use smaller boats.  With the explosion of kayak fishing in recent years, it is no wonder these smaller versions of the shallow water anchor are becoming more prevalent.  The entire set-up, the motor, clamp, and micro spike can be had for right around $700, a much smaller price tag than it’s bigger cousin seen on bass boats and walleye boats of many tournament anglers.

The anchor’s mounting is fairly straight forward, and can be done easily and quickly by most anglers.  Some choose to run a separate battery for the micro anchor, while others run it off of the same battery used by a GPS.  It really depends on the amount of use an angler will be giving all of their electronic devices.  Many anglers report using the anchor for an entire day’s fishing and still having over half of their battery life available.  The anchor has a battery life indicator, making it easy to tell just how much battery is remaining.

There is no doubt that the micro Power Pole ® is a great addition to any kayak.  For kayak tournament anglers, it may also be the thing that makes the big difference in the tournament standings.   With so many reasons to have a micro anchor, and its ease of use and installation, there is really no reason to not have one.
