KastKing at 2015 Jamaica Bay Kayak Tournament

By Kastking | 24 January 2018 | 0 Comments

Eposeidon’s leading brand, KastKing is the weapon of choice for this two-time Jamaica Bay Kayak Fishing Tournament champ.

The  Kayak Fishing Classic at Jamaica Bay has been a northeast kayak tournament for 12 years. For 2015 the Kayak Fishing Classic takes place May 14 through 17th. Jerry Collins from Captain Kayak has hosted and organized this catch and release tournament since 2009.  Kayak anglers from all across the northeast flock to Brooklyn, NY to participate. KastKing, a fishing tackle product brand manufactured by Eposeidon, is an event sponsor. Premier sponsors include Hobie Kayaks and The Fisherman Magazine. All proceeds from this tournament go to Heroes On the Water, Send A Kid Fishing, and The Education Center of the Sportfishing Alliance.  Four species of fish are typically targeted. They are species that Jamaica Bay is well known for; striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, and fluke. There many different fishing methods, types of fishing tackle, and areas that allow you to make the most out of this three day event. Below are my recommended tips to make the most of this three day event.

By far one of the most popular and easy ways to go out and catch fish at this tournament is to head straight east from the tournament launch site (Floyd Bennett Field) and into the Pumpkin Patch Channel or Broad Channel.  Many anglers venturing into this area prefer to use what’s called a Tube N Worm rig. This 9”-15” plastic red plastic tube is wired through and has a 6/0-9/0 hook at the end. Kayak Carl’s Tubes are very popular on Long Island due to their durability and moldable shape. Tip the hook with a large sandworm and troll it at about 1.5 knots. Typically you will encounter bluefish and striped bass with this technique. If large weakfish are around they will attack the tube, also. A good rod for this method of fishing is the patent-pending KastKing Phantom Kayak Rod. It’s a medium heavy rod with a short butt that is sensitive enough for a light pick up in a decent chop, and sturdy enough to battle big bluefish. They are made in both conventional and spinning series. Both kayak rod models are available in medium power for smaller fish. I use KastKing braided line on all of my reels and it will help you get your tube rig deeper in the water column.  For stripers and bluefish, thirty pound test KastKing braid is enough, but you can go as light as twenty pound braid in structure-free areas as long as you don’t overtighten your drag. Slow trolling tubes with about 25 yards of KastKing braid out will get your rig down about 5-8 feet which is perfect for the depths of this channel.

If you plan on doing any fluke fishing for the weekend the same KastKing rod makes a great bucktailing rod with spinning or conventional tackle. I use Spro bucktails in white with 4” swimming mullets typically.  For this tournament carry bucktails from 3/4oz to 1 ½ ounces. About three feet of 25lb fluorocarbon leader is sufficient. Teasers are optional, but keep in mind there are bluefish roaming those channels at times and they will do a number on your carefully tied teaser rigs. I highly recommend sticking with braided lines as well for this type of fishing. Many of these areas run from 25-45 feet of water, braided line will really help you cut deep to the bottom. Fifteen to twenty pound KastKing is my preference, certainly no heavier for fluke fishing. The deep channel from the tournament ramp to the Cross Bay Bridge are typically good areas to hunt for fluke. Fluke can be tricky to find early in the season, and can highly prefer one tide over the other. If the water is still cold I recommend sticking to the outgoing tides only for your fluke hunt.

Eposeidon and their KastKing brand products will be on display at the Kayak Fishing Classic at Jamaica Bay, so feel free to ask any questions about any of the KastKing rods, reels, or lines.  They are also donating a generous array of these products for the fundraising raffle effort of the tournament that supports various fishing related charities that include Heroes On the Water, The Fisherman Send a Kid Fishing program, and the Robert K. Sweeney Sportfishing Education Center.  This year’s event will again be a qualifier for the 2015 Hobie World Championship on Shang Lake in China November 9th through 16th.  Hope to see everyone at the tournament and wishing everyone a great 2015 season!
