Green Therapy Fishing

Of all the prescriptions written, perhaps the best is one for green therapy fishing.

Catch Two Fish and Call Me in the Morning

My tense shoulders were stuck at a desk after a long commute of beeping horns and zigzagging lane changers, desperate to get to work on time. I toiled feverishly in my uncomfortable chair adding the final touches to the project I had worked on for weeks. At the appointed time I walked the long corridor to the monthly meeting like I was headed for the gallows. I committed to keeping my hands unclasped and my breath even as I delivered my presentation to the suits and ties sitting across from me at the cold conference table. The air was punctuated with unwelcome stress as I attempted to read the faces of management and the fate of my project. Deep within my being, a Type A personality longed for respite.

If you can relate to the above scenario and are looking for a simple escape with far reaching benefits, read on…

Relief comes in many forms. Some seek traditional therapy while others exercise or do yoga. The joy of fishing has been an obvious choice to some for a long time. The secret that it’s good for the soul is beginning to come to light with researchers in the psychological community. Fishing plus fresh air equals stress-busting therapy.

Get out of the gym and go green.  Green exercise, performed outdoors, is growing in popularity and includes activities such as fishing. Green pursuits are to people in the twenty-first century, what Jack Lalanne was to people in the 60’s.

Green therapy should command the attention of those seeking sanctuary. Breathing in lungs full of crisp air and aligning with nature needs to be on every to-do list.  A silent attempt to merge with wild life in an environment void of human hustle and bustle, is an effective remedy to combat the curve balls life throws. In other words, go fish.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing is Green Therapy

Green therapy fishing programs such as Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, have sprung up all over the United States and elsewhere, catering to war veterans suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), individuals with disabilities, and those suffering from mental health issues such as depression.

My knowledge of fishing began vicariously with the 1960’s Andy Griffith Show. The whistling of The Fishin’ Hole theme song, a leisurely walk with poles over shoulders, and a longing for the simple life were infused into my being through osmosis. Sitting by a creek, waiting for the fish to bite, with a moment to collect one’s thoughts seemed like a peaceful way to spend an afternoon. Apparently, some therapists agree. Who knew fishing, as a part of green therapy, would get such high accolades and be considered in vogue all these years later?

Andy Griffith took Green Therapy Fishing to a new level in the 1960s.

If you didn’t grow up in a town like Mayberry, your fishing experiences might be limited, but there’s more than one way to catch a fish. An excursion on a charter boat out of Freeport’s Nautical Mile on Long Island or in your area is an inexpensive family friendly way to explore the art of fishing as a novice.

If the turbulence of a rocking boat slapping the current in predictable undulations has you seasick, Long Island is home to many other coveted fishing spots. Perhaps the beautiful Captree State Park fishing pier would suit your fancy, or the famous Fire Island Inlet. The saltmarshes of the Great South Bay are also inviting with their teeming selection of fluke, stripers, bluefish and weakfish.

For the fishing newbie I’d recommend a pilgrimage to Long Island’s Connectquot River State Park.  Fly fishing in hip waders for trout is popular sport at the park. Although, sitting by the bank of the river soaking up the scenery of rare nesting birds and interesting flora is just as appealing. Even if you don’t catch a thing, the stress reducing therapeutic rewards will be worth the trip.

Any fishing trip requires a few essentials. If you don’t have fishing tackle in the attic for your fishing debut www.eposeidon.com can provide rods, reels and wide variety of fishing lures.

Sit still and composed, even if you have no idea what you’re doing, and you’ll understand the tranquility of fishing and how therapeutic it is for the soul. Chicken soup has nothing on fishing. Be patient as you wait for a nibble, listen to the sounds of nature, and watch the birds soaring overhead. Breathe in through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for three seconds, exhale through your mouth for four seconds, and repeat. Let the worry mask melt away as your heartrate slows and you reap the rewards of fishing, an up and coming green therapy. Next time you’re stressed or have a headache, try reaching for a rod and reel instead of aspirin. You may get hooked.
